Audience: A class of 6th grade students that are enrolled in a class called Career Pathways/Computer Technologies.
Learning Objectives:
Students will learn the term netiquette and how it applies to online activity.
Students will demonstrate knowledge of how to stay safe online.
Students will engage in an online discussion about online safety.
Activities: Using Edmodo
Students will log on to Edmodo using their username and password. They will then read the directions provided by the teacher to click on the folder “Digital Literacy”. From there, they will be re-directed to Google Digital Literacy Tour where they will watch videos describing online safety. Students will be directed to engage in a teacher-moderated, online discussion about online safety and will also take a quiz through Edmodo regarding the lessons learned about online safety.
Pedagogical Considerations:
The strategy of using Edmodo is that it is a “safe” online environment for students to learn and engage in an online community while learning about the safe ways to utilize the internet.
Links to other disciplines or units:
This unit links with other disciplines and/or units through an exploration/ mapping out of their possible career choice. Students would look at the required school courses for each career, become familiarized with a career pathway map and determine which high school they will need to attend in order to accomplish their goal. This allows them to understand why there are required courses that they must complete as they progress through middle school and high school.
Assessment:
Students will be assessed through an online discussion where their posts/responses will be read and graded according to a rubric. Students will also be assessed through a quiz that they will take in Edmodo about the learning material. Students can earn merit badges through successful completion of the assignments.
